Older Gaming Laptops: Mobile GPUs, Model Specifications and Used-Buying Checks
The short answer
Match benchmark results to the complete laptop model and GPU. Inspect the battery and cooling, check driver support, and include repair costs when comparing a used machine.

What's covered9
Buying a used gaming laptop means checking both its specifications and its condition. Ask for the model code, installed hardware and a working demonstration. Include the battery, charger and any repair costs when comparing it with another machine.
GTX 980M, 970M, 965M, 960M and 860M
The M suffix identifies a mobile GPU: a GTX 980M and a desktop GTX 980 are different products. Memory capacity and outputs can vary by laptop. NVIDIA's March 2015 mobile line card, in Spanish, lists these memory-bus widths:
- GTX 980M: published memory-bus width of 256-bit. Still check installed memory, laptop cooling and supported drivers.
- GTX 970M: published memory-bus width of 192-bit. Still check the exact laptop configuration and memory capacity.
- GTX 965M: published memory-bus width of 128-bit. Still check the full GPU identity and the laptop's dated specifications.
- GTX 960M: published memory-bus width of 128-bit. Still check app support and realistic game settings.
- GTX 860M: not covered by that 900M line card. Check the exact device identifier and maker specifications.
These are specifications, not measured frame rates. Bus width alone cannot rank GPUs. The line card's marketing performance labels refer to its own historical context; they are not current game results.
NVIDIA's supported-device table for driver 352.30 lists several GTX 860M identifiers. Obtain the hardware identifier from the laptop and match it to the maker's specification; the product name alone does not resolve the configuration.
Matching a benchmark to your laptop
Check the precise laptop, CPU, GPU, memory, driver and power mode. Compare the same game version, resolution and settings. A result from a clean review unit does not prove a used laptop avoids thermal throttling. Tests run on mains power do not describe battery gaming.
Before buying for a demanding game, check its requirements and look for a test of the matching laptop configuration. Include resolution, graphics settings and power mode in that comparison. If suitable evidence is scarce, weigh the purchase against current gaming laptop choices and allow for uncertainty in your budget.
MSI GS40 6QE Phantom
MSI's GS40 6QE specification lists a 14-inch Full HD screen, GTX 970M with 3GB GDDR5, two DDR4 memory slots and a 150W adapter. Storage configurations vary. Its HDMI entry specifies 4K at 30 Hz; do not assume it drives a 4K screen at a higher rate through that port.
Match the regional model suffix and installed SSD and RAM to the listing. Inspect the charger and hinges, and ask for a sustained workload demonstration. Listen for damaged fans and check that the vents are clear before accepting the unit.
MSI GT75VR Titan Pro
The MSI 2017 product brochure identifies GTX 1080 8GB GDDR5X for the GT75VR 7RF Titan Pro. Other suffixes can differ. Check MSI's exact 7RF specification against the label of the used machine.
Check every power adapter the exact configuration requires, the keyboard, display and cooler. A large gaming chassis is not proof of present-day performance or good fan condition. Confirm the software you want supports the installed hardware and OS.
HP 15-an000ng notebook
HP's 15-an000ng specification lists a Core i5-6200U, GeForce 940M with 2GB dedicated memory, 8GB DDR3L and a 1TB hard drive. These details apply to that regional product number. Match the number on the laptop to HP's support record before using the specification.
Inspect the battery, hinges and charger, then check the requirements of the software you intend to run. Case styling does not establish gaming capability; the installed GPU, cooling and software support determine whether the machine suits the task.
Acer Aspire Nitro VN7-793G and VN7-593G
The 793G and 593G names identify different model families. Use Acer's VN7-793G support records and VN7-593G support records to locate documentation for the exact machine.
For regional suffixes such as 709A and 758J, start with the full label and installed hardware. Locate the matching Acer record rather than transferring specifications from another suffix. Check the storage connections and ports in its manual before planning an upgrade.
ASUS ROG Strix GL553VD
ASUS's 2017 product guide includes the GL553VD. Use the full suffix and ASUS model support for the precise shipped configuration, drivers and service information. A GL553VD listing is not interchangeable with every GL553 variant.
Inspect the GPU and display listed by the actual unit. Test the keyboard and ports, check the vents and charger, and compare the storage with the listing. The complete suffix and installed hardware are the basis for an upgrade plan.
Lowering laptop temperature and thermal-paste questions
Start with unobstructed vents, a hard surface, the correct adapter and the maker's supported power settings. Check for failed fans and dust before assuming paste is the cause. Dell's overheating guidance describes the wider troubleshooting approach.
Replacing paste requires the exact service procedure. Some laptops use special thermal materials or pad thicknesses; changing them incorrectly can make cooling worse. Do not use a generic disassembly guide or promise a temperature drop. If the service manual does not identify the materials and procedure, use qualified repair support.
Make the used price meaningful
Add any battery, adapter and repair costs. Compare the total with budget gaming notebooks and gaming laptops below a $500 budget. For a machine used mainly in class, check college-laptop needs as well. The most suitable laptop is the one that meets your workload in its actual condition.
