Windows Security: Built-In Protection, Free Suites and Buying Criteria
The short answer
Start with a supported, updated Windows system and active protection. Add a paid suite only for a feature you need; antivirus cannot make an unsupported OS fully secure.

What's covered6
Choosing PC protection starts with the operating system and your habits, not a ranked product list. Keep supported updates enabled, download from known sources and protect important accounts. A security suite is one layer in that setup.
What built-in Windows protection covers
Windows Security includes Microsoft Defender Antivirus and access to other protection settings. Microsoft's product explanation separates the Windows features from the Microsoft Defender app offered with Microsoft 365. Similar names do not mean the same product or subscription.
Open Windows Security and check which antivirus provider is active. Microsoft's scan guidance explains how to scan an item and inspect the protection settings. A green-looking desktop icon is less useful than confirming the current provider, updates and warnings.
Free antivirus versus a paid suite
Free protection can be a sensible starting point if it is supported and actively updated. Compare what the product includes and which features require payment. Advertising, browser extensions, account requirements and renewal terms also affect the experience.
A paid suite may add parental controls, identity-related services, backup or device management. Buy for a feature you will use, after reading its limits. Do not assume that a bundle's VPN, password manager and antivirus are each the best fit simply because they share a checkout.
Microsoft's real-time protection notes say that Defender Antivirus turns itself off when a compatible non-Microsoft antivirus is installed. Check the active provider in Windows Security after changing products. Follow the vendors' guidance before combining real-time scanners.
Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10 context
Check your exact Windows version in Microsoft's lifecycle records. Antivirus and operating-system updates address different risks. If normal support has ended, examine the supported-system options as well as the security product you use.

Bitdefender Antivirus Plus and free-edition questions
Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, the free antivirus and the larger suites have different feature sets. Use Bitdefender's support center to check the exact product, supported OS and included features. Compare the edition you can install with the protection and account controls you need.
For multi-device or family use, check the supported device count, OS coverage and renewal terms. Make a list of the features you will use before choosing a subscription. A feature included in the larger bundle is useful only if it addresses a need in your setup.
How to read an antivirus test
AV-TEST's test procedures and AV-Comparatives' testing methods describe different assessments. Read the product version, test date, operating system and test category. Detection, false alarms and performance impact answer different questions.
Read several recent tests that name the product version and platform you will use. Compare protection results alongside false alarms and system impact. Each result describes its test conditions, so consider the evidence together rather than treating one award as a guarantee.
The protections a suite cannot replace
Use a strong unique password for each important account and enable multifactor authentication where available. Keep a separate backup whose recovery you have checked. Be cautious with unexpected attachments and sign-in requests. CISA's Secure Our World guidance covers these everyday defenses.
On a new student machine, choose the laptop for the course workload before adding software subscriptions. Then set up updates, account recovery and backups. Security should leave you with a clear, maintained setup rather than a pile of unused tools.
